2020 Honors Lit/Comp 5-6 Assignments

These questions will count as a quiz grade.

You must complete the STAR reading test by Sunday at midnight if you were absent when we took it in class. If you took it already, you can submit this assignment. This is only to serve as a reminder for everyone.

Using the notes provided (and any other notes you find by doing your own research), complete the Fragments, Run-on's and Comma Splices Google Forms. Please review the notes via the link BEFORE attempting the assignment.

NOTE: This assignment is due by the end of the day!!

1. Watch the YouTube video & follow along on the PDF as the narrator (an SAT Reading perfect scorer) reads/outlines the passage
2. Answer the assigned questions in the Google Forms. You can take the Google Forms as many times as you would like until you are satisfied with your score.

DUE: FRIDAY, MARCH 5TH

In order to receive extra credit, you must have your parent/guardian complete the survey and take a picture/screenshot the green check mark that appears at the end of the survey. You must turn in that picture as proof that you have completed the survey. If you do not turn in the picture, you will not receive extra credit.

Note: Sometimes completing the survey on a phone can be difficult. I suggest you have your parent/guardian complete the survey on a laptop.

Open the Google Slides and complete the directions on each slide. Be sure to pay attention to the notes at the bottom of the slides for sentence requirements.

Please carefully read the instructions in the Google Forms to complete this assignment.

Read the passage in the PDF and answer the questions in the Google Forms.

After watching the assigned Khan Academy videos, answer the questions that correlate with the passage. You can answer the questions as many times as you want until you get 100%.

Note: The Khan Academy videos walk you through completing each question, so if you are having trouble completing them, consider watching the videos.

You must watch the videos in this post prior to completing the reading passage questions in the next post.

Follow along as we complete this assignment in class. You are only required to submit the introduction and the 3 body paragraphs.

Hi everyone, I am considering starting a book club! This is not a requirement, but rather an incentive/opportunity for students that enjoy reading/discussing books. We would most likely meet once a week & read at least one book per month, however, the guidelines are up in the air at the moment. We will figure out how we will get the books (maybe from MHS/online), which books we are interested in reading, and what topics we would focus on when discussing the books.

I encourage everyone to consider the idea, however, the goal is to find students that will be committed to the club. The students that will be part of this club are motivated to read and will view this as a fun opportunity, rather than a burden. If this sounds like you, I would LOVE it if you would join. If you have friends that you know are interested, but do not have me as a teacher, you can recommend them to me and they may be able to join as well.

The book club will have its own Google Classroom, so that we have a meet link and are able to keep track of the books we are reading there.

This will take some planning, but it could be very fun once we get the hang of it!

2. Fill in the persuasive elements chart
3. Type your introduction and first body paragraph about your 1st persuasive technique ONLY on the second page of the document. (In total, you are only submitting 2 paragraphs.)

This is due Sunday by midnight so that I am able to grade the essays before the semester deadline.

Follow along as we read the SAT prompt and complete the SAT essay as a class.

2. Reply to your own post and copy/paste your 1st body paragraph and 2nd body paragraph.

1. Open the Holiday Figurative Language Assignment PDF to view the questions that you need to answers.
2. Open the Answer Sheet Holiday Figurative Language Assignment and type your answers to the corresponding questions in this document. When finished, submit.

Note: If you need help with the definitions of the figurative language definitions, refer to the Figurative Language Definitions document.

Post one of the five sample introduction paragraphs you created in the "SAT Essay-Introductory Paragraph Activity" below:

1. Watch the video tutorial to understand how to complete the assignment properly.
2. Click on the Google Document titled "SAT Essay-Introductory Paragraph Activity" to complete the assignment. You should type directly onto this assignment- do not open another document or link another document.

Note: There is a mini mistake in the video tutorial. I forgot to include "and" when listing the three persuasive techniques in the example paragraph. It should read "Three persuasive techniques the author uses to effectively support his claim are anecdote, repetition, *and* bias." So, just make to add "and" before your last technique.
