Due:

Grammar: FANBOYS Info and Practice - Intro Lesson in Google Classroom

Grammar: FANBOYS Info and Practice - Intro Lesson

Dear Students,

Your Short Story Assessment gave each of you a chance to write about the characters and story that we discussed in depth in class. As we continue writing - and as we move into a writing unit with an essay - knowing how to use FANBOYS can be especially helpful. FANBOYS are conjunctions (linking words) that connect different parts of a sentence together. Getting practice with FANBOYS can help your writing right away. In other words, it's a quick way to level up your writing.

To help you do that, please do the following:
1 - Watch the Kahn Academy video on Coordinating Conjunctions. Kahn Academy does a good job, but they sometimes use words and phrases that can be a little complicated. If you feel a little unsure of what the speaker means, just keep listening. Overall, this is a good video that should be helpful.

2 - Complete the No Red Ink exercise titled, "Identifying Coordinating Conjunctions" (FANBOYS). (You should do this lesson before the second No Red Ink Lesson.)

3 - Click on the next circle (gray circle with a key in the middle of it) to go to the next assigned lesson and exercise. This next lesson and exercise is called, "Identifying the Function of FANBOYS." Please complete the Lesson and Practice portion. (NOTE: The "Quiz Me" and "History" portion are optional.)

Try to complete as much of this assignment as you can in class today. If you do not finish, the due date is Tuesday, Dec. 1 just before midnight.

Due:

ACE Summary for your Chosen Article in Google Classroom

ACE Summary for your Chosen Article

Dear students,

Last week, you researched an article of your choice when you completed the “Research an Article” document. (You can find that document under “Assignments: Week 12. You can also find the two videos about Click Restraint that we discussed.)

For our shortened week this week, I’d like you to clean up the summary you wrote in the “Research an Article” document. You already wrote a summary for the article of your choosing. Think of that as a rough draft. Now, using the ACE Summary Template, please do the following:

1 – Pull up the article you selected last week for the “Research an Article” assignment.
2 – Reread the summary you wrote on the “Research an Article” document last week.
3 – Reread the article you choose for the “Research an Article” document.
4 – After rereading both the summary you wrote last week and the article you chose last week, use the ACE Summary Template I’ve attached for this week, do the following:

--> Complete Steps 1-3 on the ACE Summary Template.
--> Complete Step 4 on the ACE Summary Template. You can use your original summary as a guide but consider the summary you wrote last week as a rough draft. THE SUMMARY YOU ARE WRITING FOR STEP 4 TODAY SHOULD BE A REVISED, NEW SUMMARY THAT INCORPORATES THE INFORMATION FROM STEPS 1-3 ON THE ACE SUMMARY TEMPLATE.

This is your only assignment for today. So please make it a good one! When I grade your ACE Summary, I will give a completion grade for your “Research an Article” document, but I will give a larger grade for the ACE Summary.

Thank you for your time, effort, and energy. I’m proud of what you are doing, and I hope that each of you has a truly wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

P.S. Try as best as you can to get this done during class today so you don't have homework. If you do not complete it during class, finish it as soon as possible so you don't have homework. The due date is Tuesday, November 24 before midnight, but finish it sooner than that so you can relax!

This diagnostic test is about identifying subjects and verbs of sentences - the building blocks of sentence construction.
