Steps2Change invited all Melvindale Students to a Day of Action in Lansing on November 13th, 2024. Steps2Change, is a Youth Empowerment Club at Melvindale High School looking to support skills development and relationship building in schools and other recreational spaces. This Day of Housing Action gave students the opportunity to see how everyday people in Michigan can demand changes from the elected officials at the State Capitol.
Steps2Change coordinator Vanessa Velazquez planned a wonderful field trip to Lansing that allowed students to participate in a project focused on housing political action. It provided students with valuable insights into civic engagement and community issues. This allowed students to engage with local leaders and activists at the State Capitol, participate in discussions on housing policies and gain hands-on experience in political advocacy and understanding the legislative process.
Our trip was concluded with an invitation by State Representative Alabas Farhat to visit the Capitol Floor before the session. Melvindale High School was also given recognition for their presence at the House Gallery while State and House Representatives were in session.
