Due to the extreme nature that this school year has presented, wrapping up the school year presents some interesting challenges. As we approach the end of the year, each student will have the opportunity to bring their grade up to a level that they feel comfortable with by completing a CAPSTONE PROJECT.

Each course will have its own set of requirements for this project, but the deadline will ALL BE THE SAME. It will be the student's responsibility to not only be familiar with each set of requirements but also the submission date and process.
In an effort to better nail down concepts and ideas during the brainstorming process, a client briefing or questionnaire can often help guide you through the process of design by answering important questions in a non-direct manner.

Considering that the designs you've been working on started out a few months ago, it may be difficult for you to remember, specifically, what your concept was built around. In an effort to better support each of you through this final project, I would like you to fill the attached "Client Questionnaire" out before our next individual meeting next week.

*Some of the questions may be difficult to answer considering this form was made for professional businesses. I would like you to do your best in an effort to answer ALL the questions on this form, to better understand the logo design process.

Additionally, I've attached a sample answer briefing from a previous project to AGAIN, help you understand a bit more of the type of answers you should be looking for or thinking about.
Attached in the AI file, are a series of different sized ARTBOARDS for you to complete this project. Over the last few weeks, you’ve practiced using the PEN TOOL to create PATHS/SHAPES that can be editted to create illustrations (pictures).

Using the skills that you have practiced, I would like you to create a BRANDING PACKAGE for your made-up company from SEM. 1. This will include the following layouts:
Letterhead
Envelope
Flyer/Handout Advertisement
Business card

You can turn off the visibity of both ARTWORK and TEXT layers in the Layers panel and create your own layers for your artwork design.

The goal of this assignment is to modify your original design to a more polished looking, profession logo/wordmark using your new skills in Illustrator. You may need to refer back to the comments left on your MIDTERM assignment as recommendations for things to modify.

Each design had or needed something to be modified and it is this final lessons intention to take your logo work to the NEXT LEVEL. This may not be the “final” outcome, but it will bring us closer our goal of being able to create a visual brand identity from scratch.

Attached in the AI file are examples of a test illustration used for each artboard template. You may use this for inspiration, but please make sure that upon submitting your work, the default ARTWORK and TEXT layers are turned off (not visible)
For this week, will wrap up our focus on working with paths by focusing on how designers can edit paths that are already created. For example, customizing the paths on TEXT.

Additionally, I would like to spend some time showing you how to use coloring options, including FILL and GRADIENTS.

To complete this assignment, I'm going to have you guys work review some options on the LAYERS panel by working on a seperate artboard.
So with our Yellow Belt training under..."our belts" (bad pun...I know) I want to challenge everyone's Pen skills by seeing how well you can trace over some one color logos using the skills you've already practiced.

While there will be many different approaches to completing this assignment, some faster/slower than others, I want you to understand that your grade on this exercise will be determined based on how well your final tracing fits the over the image below it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your tracings should be all connected to create essentially ONE PATH/SHAPE. This DOES NOT mean that you should GROUP your paths together, but simply make sure that all paths/shapes are combined or joined so that recoloring and /or resizing can be done with a simple "one-click" function.

Back at it with Illustrator, and (what I feel) an awesome opportunity to practice and review your PEN SKILLS.

The Pen Tool, when used properly can be a huge advantage to creating vector artwork inside Illustrator. Most people when starting out, struggle a bit due to their connection/understanding of brush tools in basic photo editing programs (Photoshop). The key here is to remember that we aren't working with raster (pixel) based imagery, but creating VECTOR (math equation) designs that no matter the size will never lose any resolution due to the way they are created.

Download the Orange Belt Challenge, and work through Levels 1-11 by tracing over the guides using your pen tool and setting the stroke to size 10pt (black). The goal here is to be able to manage the tool by learning shortcuts and help buttons to have a faster workflow.

I will be demonstrating a few levels LIVE this Friday, Feb. 5 at 2:00 (during our regular scheduled mtg. time). Please make a point to attend and have the file downloaded/open before accessing the stream.
For our first assignment this second semester, I'd like to follow the same path we took back in September and highlight something about ourselves.

This week, I'd like you to take a photograph of your workspace, and label and identify 10 objects or things that you enjoy about this area, or help you focus as you settle in for work. These could be your favorite pens or books, or simply an area in the room that you feel the most comfortable in. You may use any digital means to complete this task (Google Slides, PowerPoint, or mobile app).*

Once you've completed this task, I'd like you to explain 3 items in this area (using the COMMENTS area when you submit this work) that you personally identify with and mean the most to you you. You can talk about why they are so important and what they represent. You can even discuss their origin and how you came into possession of these objects.

When you've completed this task, you will have a digital photograph with labels to submit, as well as a short write-up in the COMMENTS section of your submission that I will be able to review.

*example photo attached
Your Ai file needs to have the following specs:

1200px X 1200px
RGB color mode
.ai and . jpg file formats
Black graphic on white background (color version optional)
Logo centered and with 1/3 spacing in mind

As with all course projects, keep in mind that your work will be assessed by:

Professionalism - project is done "to spec", follows directions, and fulfills requirements.

Craftsmanship - project exhibits an admirable application of design principles and use of tools.

Originality/Effort - content is unique (not copied or derivative) and the solution is challenging.*

*NOTE-any work submitted that directly violates the school's plagarism rule will result in a ZERO score automatically
After the initial assessment, you have one week 24 hrs to schedule time to meet up for feedback.
After the feedback meeting, you have one week 48 hrs to turn in a revised version.
You get one round of these re-edits for a given project.
The revised solution needs to show considerable improvement in order to earn points.
It is easier to go from 140pts to 160pts than 180pts to 200pts. (Remember, 200pts means truly professional-quality work.)
